How to Put Down Hardwood Flooring?

Acclimate the hardwood flooring in the room for the manufacturer-recommended time

Remove baseboards, shoe molding, and existing flooring if needed

Clean and level the subfloor

Check subfloor moisture and repair any damage

Install underlayment or moisture barrier if required

Find the starting wall and snap a straight chalk line

Measure the room and plan the layout to avoid narrow last rows

Cut the first row boards to fit if needed

Place spacers along the walls for expansion gaps

Install the first row with the tongue or groove facing the correct direction

Nail, staple, glue, or float the flooring according to the product type

Stagger end joints between rows

Tap boards tightly together using a tapping block

Continue installing row by row across the room

Cut boards to fit around doorways, vents, and obstacles

Use a pull bar for the final rows near the wall

Remove spacers after installation

Reinstall baseboards and shoe molding

Fill nail holes and touch up as needed

Clean the floor and follow the manufacturer’s curing or use instructions
