Take a healthy stem cutting from a mature hibiscus plant
Choose a 4 to 6 inch cutting with several leaves and at least one node
Remove flowers, buds, and the lower leaves
Dip the cut end in rooting hormone if desired
Plant the cutting in a pot filled with moist, well-draining potting mix
Insert the cutting deep enough to cover at least one node
Firm the soil around the cutting
Water lightly to settle the soil
Cover the pot with a clear plastic bag or humidity dome if needed
Place the cutting in bright, indirect light
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy
Wait for roots to develop over several weeks
Transplant the rooted cutting into a larger pot or garden bed
Propagate hibiscus from seeds by soaking seeds before planting
Sow seeds in warm, moist seed-starting mix
Keep seeds warm and evenly moist until germination
Propagate hibiscus by air layering on a healthy branch
Wrap a wounded section of branch with moist sphagnum moss and plastic
Cut and pot the branch after roots form
Propagate hardy hibiscus by dividing established plants in early spring
Replant divisions immediately and water well
