Find the inch marks on the ruler
Identify the longest lines as whole inches
Count the smaller lines between whole inches
Note that the smallest common marks are usually sixteenths of an inch
Read from the zero mark, not the edge of the ruler
Match the line you are measuring to the nearest inch fraction
Add whole inches and fractions together to get the measurement
