Read the VIN from left to right
Identify the first 3 characters as the World Manufacturer Identifier
Identify characters 4 through 8 as the vehicle descriptor section
Identify the 9th character as the check digit
Identify the 10th character as the model year
Identify the 11th character as the assembly plant
Identify characters 12 through 17 as the vehicle’s production sequence number
Use the VIN to look up the manufacturer, model, engine, body style, and year
Verify that the VIN matches the vehicle title, registration, and door jamb label
