Locate the meter display
Identify the meter type
Read the numbers from left to right
Ignore any red numbers, dials, or decimal points if instructed by your utility
For digital meters, note the kWh reading shown on the screen
For analog dial meters, read each dial in order from left to right
If a dial pointer is between two numbers, record the lower number unless it is between 9 and 0, then record 9
Write down the full reading exactly as shown
Compare the current reading with the previous reading to calculate usage
Submit the reading to your utility if required
