Open the Messenger chat
Tap the person’s name at the top
Check whether the chat is marked as end-to-end encrypted
Use the same device and account that received the message
Make sure Messenger is updated to the latest version
Enter your device passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID if prompted
Restore your secure storage or recovery code if you changed devices
Verify your identity if Messenger asks for it
Open the encrypted message thread to view the message
If the message is not visible, check archived chats and message requests
If you lost access to secure storage, follow Messenger’s account recovery steps
If the message was sent in a secret conversation, open that exact conversation on the correct device
