Identify the meter type
Read the display from left to right
Record all black numbers first
Ignore red numbers if instructed
Check for decimal points if present
Note any dials or digital indicators
Write down the full reading exactly as shown
Compare with the previous reading if needed
Submit the reading to the utility provider
