Read the longest marks first
Count the smaller marks between the long marks
Measure from the zero mark to the end of the object
Use the correct side of the ruler for inches or centimeters
Align the ruler straight with the object
Read the number at the point where the object ends
Estimate between marks if the end falls between two lines
Double-check the measurement for accuracy
