Check the main scale reading just to the left of the vernier zero
Note the vernier division that exactly matches a main scale mark
Multiply the matching vernier division number by the least count
Add the vernier reading to the main scale reading
Use the formula: Total reading = Main scale reading + Vernier scale reading
If needed, apply zero error correction to the total reading
