Apply a cold compress to the lips for 10–15 minutes at a time
Keep your head elevated
Avoid touching, rubbing, or biting the lips
Rinse gently with cool water if the swelling is from irritation
Take an over-the-counter antihistamine if the swelling is from an allergic reaction and you can safely use it
Use an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed and appropriate
Avoid spicy, salty, hot, or acidic foods and drinks
Stop using any new lip products, cosmetics, or foods that may have triggered the swelling
Stay hydrated
Use a plain, fragrance-free lip balm if the lips are dry or chapped
Seek urgent medical help if you have trouble breathing, swallowing, or swelling of the tongue or throat
Seek medical care if the swelling is severe, worsening, or does not improve within 24–48 hours
