Swallow, yawn, or chew sugar-free gum
Perform the Valsalva maneuver (gently blow with your mouth closed and nose pinched)
Perform the Toynbee maneuver (swallow while pinching your nose)
Try gentle jaw movements (open and close the jaw, move it side to side)
Use steam or a warm shower to help loosen congestion
Use a saline nasal spray or saline rinse
Use a decongestant nasal spray (e.g., oxymetazoline) for up to 3 days if appropriate
Take an oral decongestant if safe for you (follow label instructions)
Use an oral antihistamine if allergies are involved (follow label instructions)
Keep hydrated and rest
Avoid flying or scuba diving until pressure resolves
If you must fly, swallow during takeoff/landing and consider earplugs designed for flying
Apply a warm compress to the affected ear or jaw area
If pain is present, use acetaminophen or ibuprofen if safe for you (follow label instructions)
Seek urgent care if you have severe pain, fever, drainage, sudden hearing loss, dizziness/vertigo, or facial weakness
Seek medical evaluation if symptoms last more than 48–72 hours or keep recurring
Check for earwax buildup if you notice reduced hearing or fullness without cold/allergy symptoms
