Do not remove a PICC line yourself
Contact a licensed nurse, physician, or trained clinician to remove it
Follow the facility’s sterile removal protocol
Wash hands and wear appropriate gloves
Position the patient as instructed by the protocol
Remove any dressing and securement device
Ask the patient to perform a breath-hold or Valsalva maneuver if directed
Gently withdraw the catheter in a slow, steady motion
Stop if resistance is felt and notify the clinician
Apply sterile gauze with pressure to the insertion site
Inspect the catheter to ensure it is intact
Cover the site with a sterile occlusive dressing
Monitor for bleeding, pain, swelling, or shortness of breath
Dispose of supplies according to clinical waste procedures
Document the removal and catheter integrity in the medical record
