How To Flush A Foley Catheter?

Wash your hands thoroughly

Gather the prescribed sterile saline or water, a syringe, and clean supplies

Check the catheter and drainage bag for kinks, clogs, or disconnections

Clean the catheter access port with an alcohol swab

Attach the syringe to the catheter port

Gently instill the prescribed amount of fluid into the catheter

Stop if you feel resistance, pain, or leakage

Withdraw the fluid if instructed, or allow it to drain as directed

Disconnect the syringe and recap the port if needed

Reconnect the drainage system securely

Wash your hands again

Contact a healthcare professional if flushing does not work or if there is pain, bleeding, fever, or no urine output
