How to Flush a Foley?

Wash your hands

Gather supplies: sterile normal saline, 10 mL syringe, alcohol swabs, clean gloves, and a clean container if needed

Check the catheter and drainage tubing for kinks, clots, or disconnections

Clamp the tubing if instructed by a clinician

Clean the catheter access port with an alcohol swab

Attach the syringe to the catheter port

Gently instill the prescribed amount of sterile normal saline

If resistance is met, stop and do not force the flush

Withdraw the syringe if instructed, or allow fluid to drain back if using an open system per protocol

Observe for return of urine or fluid and check that drainage resumes

Disconnect the syringe and replace any cap or cover

Unclamp the tubing if it was clamped

Dispose of used supplies properly

Wash your hands again

Contact a clinician if there is no drainage, pain, leakage, blood, swelling, or resistance during flushing
