Wash your hands thoroughly
Gather the prescribed flush solution, syringe, alcohol wipes, and gloves if needed
Check the catheter type and follow the exact instructions given by your healthcare provider
Clamp the catheter if instructed
Clean the access port with an alcohol wipe and let it dry
Attach the syringe securely to the catheter port
Gently flush the catheter with the prescribed amount of solution
Stop immediately if you feel resistance, pain, or swelling
Disconnect the syringe and recap the port if required
Unclamp the catheter if it was clamped
Dispose of used supplies properly
Wash your hands again
Contact your healthcare provider if you cannot flush the catheter or notice redness, leakage, fever, or pain
