Lift the stopper to the open position
Look for a set screw, knob, or cap on the stopper
Unscrew or loosen any visible set screw
Twist the stopper counterclockwise to remove it
Pull the stopper straight up if it is a lift-and-turn type
Press down and turn the stopper if it is a push-pull type
Remove the stopper by unscrewing the top if it is a toe-touch type
Remove the linkage or pivot rod if it is a trip-lever type
Use pliers gently if the stopper is stuck
Wipe away any debris after removal
