Wash your hands
Clean the area gently with warm water and mild soap
Soak the area in warm water for 10–15 minutes, 3–4 times a day
Apply a warm compress to soften the skin
Do not squeeze, pick, or dig at the ingrown
Gently exfoliate the area if the skin is not broken
Use a sterile needle or tweezers only if the hair tip is clearly visible above the skin
Lift the hair out gently without pulling it out from the root
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if the skin is irritated or broken
Keep the area clean and dry
Wear loose clothing to reduce friction
Stop shaving or waxing the area until it heals
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or repeated ingrown hairs
