Wash your hands

Clean the area gently with warm water and mild soap

Soak the area in warm water for 10–15 minutes, 3–4 times a day

Apply a warm compress to soften the skin

Do not squeeze, pick, or dig at the ingrown

Gently exfoliate the area if the skin is not broken

Use a sterile needle or tweezers only if the hair tip is clearly visible above the skin

Lift the hair out gently without pulling it out from the root

Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if the skin is irritated or broken

Keep the area clean and dry

Wear loose clothing to reduce friction

Stop shaving or waxing the area until it heals

Seek medical care if there is severe pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or repeated ingrown hairs
