Let the dirt settle before striking
Use a slower, controlled swing
Aim slightly above the dirt block
Avoid hitting loose dirt from very close range
Stand on stable ground
Keep the area clear of other blocks that can break and scatter
Use a shovel first if you want to remove dirt cleanly
If using a mace in-game, strike from a safer angle to reduce block disruption
Turn off block-breaking effects if the game or mod allows it
Use a different tool for dirt instead of the mace
