Confirm head lice by checking the scalp and hair, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck
Use an over-the-counter lice treatment exactly as directed on the package
Repeat the treatment as instructed, usually after 7 to 10 days
Comb wet hair with a fine-toothed lice comb to remove lice and nits
Section hair and comb from scalp to ends, wiping the comb after each pass
Wash bedding, hats, scarves, and recently worn clothing in hot water and dry on high heat
Seal items that cannot be washed in a plastic bag for at least 2 weeks
Vacuum furniture, car seats, and floors where the person has been sitting or lying
Check all household members for lice and treat only those who are infested
Avoid sharing combs, brushes, hats, helmets, towels, and pillows
Continue checking the scalp every few days for 2 to 3 weeks
Contact a healthcare professional if lice persist after treatment or if the scalp becomes irritated or infected
