How to Remove Head Lice?

Confirm head lice by checking the scalp and hair, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck

Use an over-the-counter lice treatment exactly as directed on the package

Repeat the treatment as instructed, usually after 7 to 10 days

Comb wet hair with a fine-toothed lice comb to remove lice and nits

Section hair and comb from scalp to ends, wiping the comb after each pass

Wash bedding, hats, scarves, and recently worn clothing in hot water and dry on high heat

Seal items that cannot be washed in a plastic bag for at least 2 weeks

Vacuum furniture, car seats, and floors where the person has been sitting or lying

Check all household members for lice and treat only those who are infested

Avoid sharing combs, brushes, hats, helmets, towels, and pillows

Continue checking the scalp every few days for 2 to 3 weeks

Contact a healthcare professional if lice persist after treatment or if the scalp becomes irritated or infected
