Wash the face gently with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water
Apply a cold compress for 5 to 10 minutes to reduce irritation
Use a fragrance-free moisturizer to soothe the skin
Avoid scratching, rubbing, or squeezing the area
Stop using any new skincare products that may be causing the reaction
Avoid harsh scrubs, acids, and retinoids until the skin calms down
Apply a thin layer of over-the-counter hydrocortisone 1% if the skin is itchy or inflamed, unless you have been told not to use it
Use an oral antihistamine if the itching is due to an allergic reaction and it is safe for you to take
Keep the face clean and dry
Avoid makeup until the skin improves
See a doctor if the rash spreads, becomes painful, oozes, or does not improve
Seek urgent medical help if there is swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, or if breathing becomes difficult
