Turn off the water supply if needed
Remove the shower grate or strainer
Clean out any visible debris around the drain
Check the drain type: threaded, compression, or glued
Insert a drain key or drain wrench into the drain opening
Turn the drain counterclockwise to loosen it
Use pliers or a screwdriver if the drain has screws or tabs
Apply penetrating oil if the drain is stuck
Heat the area gently with a hair dryer if needed
Cut through old caulk or sealant around the drain
Lift the drain out once it is loosened
Use a utility knife or putty knife to remove remaining sealant
Remove any old plumber’s putty or gasket material
Clean the drain opening thoroughly before installing a new drain
