Wash your hands and the area around the splinter with soap and water
Sterilize tweezers and a needle with rubbing alcohol
If the splinter is sticking out, grip it with the tweezers and pull it out in the same direction it entered
If the splinter is under the skin, gently use the sterilized needle to lift the tip out
Once the tip is exposed, remove it with the tweezers
Wash the area again with soap and water
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment
Cover with a clean bandage
Change the bandage daily and keep the area clean
Seek medical help if the splinter is deep, near the eye, in the foot and hard to remove, or if signs of infection appear
