Apply a cold compress for 10–20 minutes at a time during the first 24–48 hours
Rest and elevate the bruised area if possible
Use a compression bandage if swelling is present and it is comfortable
After 48 hours, use a warm compress for 10–20 minutes at a time
Take acetaminophen if you need pain relief
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen in the first 24 hours if possible
Protect the bruise from further impact
Gently move the area if stiffness develops
Eat foods rich in vitamin C and vitamin K
Stay hydrated
Seek medical care if the bruise is large, very painful, keeps growing, or appears without injury
