Apply a cold pack for 10–20 minutes at a time during the first 24–48 hours
Elevate the bruised area above heart level when possible
Rest the injured area and avoid further impact
Use a compression bandage if swelling is present and it is comfortable
Switch to warm compresses after 48 hours to help blood flow
Take acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen in the first 24 hours if possible
Eat foods rich in vitamin C and vitamin K
Stay hydrated
Protect the bruise from additional pressure or injury
Seek medical care if the bruise is very large, very painful, or keeps getting worse
Seek medical care if bruising happens easily without injury
Seek medical care if you have numbness, severe swelling, or trouble moving the area
Seek medical care if you take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder
