How to Remove Splinter from Under Fingernail?

Wash your hands with soap and water

Soak the finger in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes

Sterilize tweezers and a needle with rubbing alcohol

Gently lift the nail edge if the splinter is visible and accessible

Use the needle to expose the splinter tip if needed

Grasp the splinter with tweezers and pull it out in the same direction it entered

If the splinter is deep, do not dig aggressively under the nail

Wash the area again after removal

Apply antiseptic or antibiotic ointment

Cover with a clean bandage

Watch for redness, swelling, pus, increasing pain, or fever

Seek medical care if the splinter is deeply embedded, cannot be removed, or signs of infection appear
