Wash your hands and the area with soap and water
Sterilize tweezers and a needle with rubbing alcohol
Use tweezers to grasp the exposed end of the splinter and pull it out in the same direction it entered
If the splinter is under the skin, use the needle to gently lift the skin over the tip
Remove the splinter with tweezers once the tip is exposed
If the splinter is tiny and near the surface, use adhesive tape to try to lift it out
Soak the area in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes if the splinter is hard to remove
After removal, wash the area again with soap and water
Apply antibiotic ointment if available
Cover with a bandage if needed
Seek medical help if the splinter is deep, near the eye, under a fingernail, or cannot be removed easily
Seek medical help if there is redness, swelling, pus, or increasing pain
