Soak the foot in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Add Epsom salt if desired
Dry the foot thoroughly after soaking
Wear roomy shoes or open-toe footwear
Avoid tight socks and pressure on the toe
Gently lift the nail edge with clean cotton or dental floss after soaking
Replace the cotton or floss daily
Trim toenails straight across, not rounded
Do not cut the nail too short
Keep the toe clean and dry
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Cover with a clean bandage if needed
Use over-the-counter pain relievers if appropriate
Avoid digging into the nail corner
Do not attempt deep cutting or self-removal of the nail
Seek medical care if there is pus, severe pain, spreading redness, fever, or repeated infection
See a podiatrist for persistent or recurrent ingrown toenails
Get urgent care if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
