How to Replace the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor?

Disconnect the negative battery cable

Locate the engine coolant temperature sensor

Allow the engine to cool completely

Place a drain pan under the radiator or sensor area

Drain enough coolant to lower the coolant level below the sensor

Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor

Remove any retaining clip, bolt, or threaded sensor as required

Remove the old sensor

Compare the old sensor with the new sensor

Install the new sensor

Tighten the sensor to the specified torque

Reinstall the retaining clip or connector lock if equipped

Reconnect the electrical connector

Refill the cooling system with the correct coolant

Bleed air from the cooling system

Reconnect the negative battery cable

Start the engine and check for leaks

Verify proper temperature gauge or scan tool readings

Clear any diagnostic trouble codes if needed
