How To Replace Wall Outlet?

Turn off power to the outlet at the breaker panel

Verify the outlet is de-energized with a voltage tester

Remove the cover plate

Unscrew the outlet from the electrical box

Gently pull the outlet out of the box

Take a photo of the existing wire connections

Loosen the terminal screws or release the backstab connections

Disconnect the wires from the old outlet

Inspect the wires for damage or corrosion

Connect the wires to the new outlet

Attach the black or red wire to the brass screw

Attach the white wire to the silver screw

Attach the bare or green ground wire to the green screw

Tighten all terminal screws securely

Fold the wires neatly back into the box

Screw the new outlet into the electrical box

Install the cover plate

Turn the breaker back on

Test the outlet with a plug-in tester or device
