Identify the type of alarm: battery-powered, hardwired, or smart smoke detector
Silence the alarm using the test or hush button
Remove the detector from its mounting bracket if needed
Turn off power at the circuit breaker for hardwired units
Remove the battery from battery-powered units
Press and hold the test button for 15 to 30 seconds to discharge residual power
Reinstall the battery or replace it with a fresh one
Reconnect the detector to the mounting bracket
Restore power at the circuit breaker for hardwired units
Press the test button to confirm the alarm resets properly
Clean the detector if dust or debris may be causing the alarm
Replace the detector if it continues to malfunction
