Identify the type of smoke alarm
Silence the alarm if needed
Turn off power at the breaker for hardwired units
Remove the alarm from its mounting bracket if required
Disconnect the battery or backup power
Press and hold the test/reset button for 15 to 30 seconds
Reinstall the battery or reconnect power
Reattach the alarm to the mounting bracket
Restore power at the breaker for hardwired units
Press the test button to confirm it works
Replace the battery if the alarm still chirps
Replace the smoke alarm if it continues to malfunction
