How To Reupholster A Chair?

Remove the seat cushion and legs (if applicable)

Remove the old fabric and padding

Disassemble the chair if needed to access staples/tacks

Remove all remaining staples/tacks and clean the frame

Inspect the frame for loose joints; tighten or repair as needed

Cut new padding to match the original shape and thickness

Attach padding to the frame using spray adhesive or upholstery glue

Create a fabric pattern using the old fabric as a template

Cut the new upholstery fabric with seam allowance

Test-fit the fabric on the chair before final attachment

Position the fabric right side up (or as required by the chair design)

Pull fabric taut and secure with staples/tacks starting at the center points

Work from the center toward the corners to keep tension even

Fold excess fabric at corners neatly; staple in place

Trim excess fabric close to the staples without cutting through the staples

Reattach any piping, trim, or welt if used

Add buttons, tufting, or decorative elements if desired

Reinstall the seat cushion to the chair frame

Reattach legs and any removed hardware

Check alignment, smoothness, and tightness of seams and corners

Vacuum or brush off debris and confirm the chair is stable and comfortable
