Apply a cold compress wrapped in a cloth for 10 to 15 minutes at a time during the first 24 to 48 hours
Repeat the cold compress every 1 to 2 hours while awake
Keep your head elevated
Rest and avoid strenuous activity
Do not press hard on the eye
Avoid rubbing the area
Use acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen in the first 24 hours unless a doctor says otherwise
After 48 hours, use a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Protect the eye from further injury
Seek medical care if you have vision changes, severe pain, blood in the eye, trouble moving the eye, worsening swelling, or symptoms after a head injury
