Open your Google Doc
Click Tools in the top menu
Select Word count
View the word count in the popup window
Check the box for Display word count while typing if you want it visible continuously
Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows or Command+Shift+C on Mac
On mobile, tap the three dots menu and select Word count if available
