How To Send A Certified Letter?

Choose the document(s) to send and keep copies for your records

Select the correct mail class and service for certified mail (with return receipt if needed)

Complete the Certified Mail form (PS Form 3800) or use the USPS online option to generate the label and receipt

Address the envelope using the recipient’s full name, street address, city, state, ZIP+4

Place the certified mail label/receipt information on the envelope as required

Bring the envelope and the completed form/label to the Post Office or prepare it for drop-off at a USPS-certified location

Pay the certified mail fee and any additional services (return receipt, restricted delivery, etc.)

Ask for and save the mailing receipt (PS Form 3817)

If using a return receipt, select the return receipt type (physical or electronic) and save the tracking/certified mail number

Track the delivery using the certified mail/tracking number on USPS

Verify delivery and obtain the return receipt when it arrives (if requested)
