Use the square root symbol: √x
Find the number that, when multiplied by itself, equals x
Example: √9 = 3 because 3 × 3 = 9
For non-perfect squares, use estimation or a calculator
To simplify, factor out perfect squares
Example: √50 = √(25 × 2) = 5√2
For negative numbers, use imaginary numbers
Example: √-1 = i
Check your answer by squaring it
Example: if √x = y, then y × y = x
