Check the fuel and oil levels
Make sure the spark plug wire is connected
Open the fuel valve if your mower has one
Set the throttle to the start or fast position
Set the choke to the closed or on position if the engine is cold
Stand behind the mower on level ground
Hold the safety bar or engine control handle
Pull the starter cord firmly until the engine starts
Move the choke to the run position after the engine warms up
Release the safety bar only after the engine is running properly
