Wash the jars, lids, and bands in hot soapy water
Rinse thoroughly
Place the jars in a large pot or canner
Cover the jars with water by at least 1 inch
Bring the water to a boil
Boil the jars for 10 minutes
Keep the jars in hot water until ready to use
Place lids and bands in hot water, not boiling, until ready to use
Remove jars with clean tongs or a jar lifter
Let jars air-dry on a clean towel or rack
Use jars while still hot for canning or preserving
