Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Use cold compresses on the outside of the cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time
Avoid chewing on the treated side
Eat soft foods and avoid very hot or very cold foods
Keep your head elevated when resting
Rinse gently with warm salt water if your dentist says it is okay
Avoid smoking and alcohol
Do not use the treated tooth for hard or sticky foods
Contact your dentist if the pain is severe, worsening, or lasts more than a few days
Seek urgent dental care if you have swelling, fever, pus, or trouble swallowing or breathing
