Wash your hands
Sit upright and lean slightly forward
Rinse your mouth gently with cold water
Apply firm pressure to the bleeding area with clean gauze or a clean cloth
Hold pressure continuously for 10 to 15 minutes
If needed, use an ice cube or cold compress on the outside of the mouth
Suck on ice chips if the bleeding is mild
Avoid spitting, rinsing forcefully, or checking the wound repeatedly
Avoid hot drinks, alcohol, smoking, and spicy foods
Keep the tongue still and avoid biting it again
If bleeding does not stop after 15 to 20 minutes of firm pressure, seek urgent medical care
Get emergency help if bleeding is heavy, the cut is deep, or breathing is affected
Seek medical care if the injury was caused by a bite, fall, or object and the wound may need stitches
Contact a doctor if you take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder
