Prepare a warm, draft-free brooder before bringing chicks home
Use a heat lamp or brooder plate to maintain proper temperature
Keep the brooder floor dry and lined with safe bedding
Provide clean water in a shallow chick-safe container
Offer chick starter feed with the correct protein level
Check chicks often for signs of chilling, overheating, or illness
Keep the brooder clean and remove wet bedding daily
Make sure chicks have enough space to move around
Protect chicks from pets, children, and other animals
Gradually reduce heat as chicks grow and feather out
Handle chicks gently and wash hands before and after contact
Keep fresh water and feed available at all times
Watch for pasty butt and clean it promptly if needed
Separate sick or weak chicks from the rest if necessary
Move chicks to a larger coop when they are fully feathered and the weather is suitable
