How to Tan a Hide?

Skin the hide as soon as possible after harvesting

Remove all flesh, fat, and membrane from the hide

Salt the hide heavily and let it drain

Rinse off the salt

Soak the hide in clean water until pliable

Prepare a tanning solution or tanning agent

Submerge the hide in the tanning solution

Stir or move the hide regularly for even tanning

Leave the hide in the solution until fully tanned

Remove the hide and rinse it

Neutralize if required by the tanning method

Oil or condition the hide if needed

Stretch the hide and work it as it dries

Dry the hide slowly away from direct heat

Soften the hide repeatedly during drying

Smoke the hide if desired for added durability

Store the finished hide in a cool, dry place
