Check the expiration or sell-by date
Place the egg in a bowl of water
If it sinks and lies flat, it is good
If it stands upright, it is older but may still be usable
If it floats, discard it
Crack the egg into a separate bowl
If the white and yolk look normal, it is likely good
If it has a bad smell, discard it
If the shell is cracked, slimy, or powdery, discard it
If the egg white is very runny or the yolk is discolored, discard it
