Place the egg in a bowl of water; fresh eggs sink and lie flat
If the egg stands upright in water, it is older but may still be usable
If the egg floats, discard it
Crack the egg into a separate bowl and look for a firm yolk and thick white
Fresh eggs have little odor
Shake the egg gently; a fresh egg should not slosh much
Check for cracks, leaks, or unusual spots on the shell
Store eggs in the refrigerator to help keep them fresh longer
