Check whether the messaging app shows a read receipt, such as “Read,” “Seen,” or a timestamp under the message
In Google Messages, look for “Read” or “Seen” if both people have RCS chat features enabled
In WhatsApp, look for one gray checkmark, two gray checkmarks, or two blue checkmarks
In Facebook Messenger, look for a small profile picture or “Seen” under the message
In Telegram, look for a single checkmark for sent and double checkmarks for read
In Instagram DMs, look for “Seen” beneath the message
In Signal, look for a filled checkmark or “Read” status if read receipts are enabled
Check whether the other person has read receipts turned on in the app settings
If the app does not support read receipts, you cannot tell for sure
If the person has disabled read receipts, you may not be able to see when they read it
If the message was sent as SMS instead of chat, read status usually will not appear
If the app shows “Delivered” but not “Read,” the message was received but not confirmed as opened
If the app shows a typing indicator after your message, it may suggest they saw it, but it does not confirm a read receipt
