Severe pain right after the injury
Swelling around the ankle
Bruising or discoloration
Tenderness to touch
Trouble putting weight on the foot
Inability to walk normally
Deformity or odd shape of the ankle
Hearing or feeling a pop at the time of injury
Pain that gets worse with movement
Numbness or tingling in the foot
Bone sticking out through the skin
Pain that does not improve after rest and ice
Get medical care right away if you suspect a fracture
