Rest the toe and avoid activities that cause pain
Ice the toe for 15 to 20 minutes at a time every 2 to 3 hours for the first 48 hours
Elevate the foot above heart level when possible
Wear a stiff-soled shoe or sandal to limit toe movement
Buddy tape the injured toe to the neighboring toe if it is not crooked or badly deformed
Place gauze or padding between the toes before taping
Keep the tape snug but not tight
Change the tape daily or if it gets wet
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you to use
Avoid putting weight on the toe as much as possible
Use crutches if walking is too painful
Keep the toe clean and dry if there is any skin break
Watch for worsening pain, swelling, bruising, numbness, or deformity
Seek medical care if the toe looks crooked, the nail is badly injured, there is an open wound, or you cannot walk
Seek urgent care if the toe is blue, cold, numb, or severely swollen
