Severe pain right after the injury

Bruising or discoloration
Toe looks crooked, bent, or out of place
Pain when walking or putting weight on the foot
Trouble moving the toe
Tenderness when touching the toe
A popping or cracking sound at the time of injury
The toe feels numb or tingling
The toenail is damaged or blood is trapped under it
Pain that does not improve after rest, ice, and elevation
If the toe is very deformed, open, or the pain is extreme, seek medical care
