Place the egg in a bowl of water
If it sinks and lies flat, it is fresh
If it sinks but stands upright, it is older but still usable
If it floats, it is no longer fresh
Crack the egg into a bowl and look for a firm, rounded yolk
Check that the egg white is thick and stays close to the yolk
Smell the egg after cracking it
Discard it if it has an off or sulfur-like odor
Inspect the shell for cracks, slime, or unusual texture
Shake the egg gently near your ear
Discard it if you hear a sloshing sound
