Verify that the child support order is eligible to end under California law
Confirm the child is emancipated, has turned 18 and is no longer a full-time high school student, or has otherwise legally become an adult
Check whether support continues past age 18 because the child is still a full-time high school student and expected to graduate before age 19
Review the existing court order for any special terms, arrears, or extended support obligations
Gather proof of the child’s age, graduation status, emancipation, or other facts supporting termination
Contact the local child support agency if the case is being handled through the Department of Child Support Services
File a Request for Order or other required court forms to terminate or modify child support
Serve the other parent and any involved agency with the filed papers
Attend the court hearing if one is scheduled
Obtain a signed court order terminating support
Continue paying any past-due child support, interest, or arrears until fully satisfied
Notify the payroll department or employer if income withholding is in place after the order changes
Keep copies of the termination order and proof of service for your records
